Chapter 7 – Klein

They took a cab up into the mountainside, far from the downtown streets of Honolulu. In reality, it wasn't that far, but the lower density of people meant less sound to bounce around in Klein's ears, and he'd grown accustomed to the quiet over many years of hiding on Rockpool Island.

Past enormous banyan and eucalyptus trees, they came up into a secluded neighborhood, and at the highest point was a property closed off with an enormous golden gate, created a long time ago by yours truly.

Tracy's mouth gaped when Klein keyed them in using his smartphone. "Wait, where are we?"

Klein didn't say anything—he didn't want to in front of the taxi driver—and just admired the property for the first time in the multiple decades since he'd last been there. The lawn was well cared for by various landscapers and gardeners, and hibiscus, as well as other flowers, created colorful beds in the front yard. The mansion itself was multiple stories, although the building itself wasn't so recognizable to him. It looked as though it had been modernized at some point, with its sweeping rooftops and open spaces.

When they were out of the taxi, the pair stood in front of the mansion, both looking at it with interest. "It's not quite as I remember it, but it will do."

"You just have a mansion in Hawaii that you haven't used in, I don't know, forever?"

"I purchased it for emergencies, which never came up. A couple of the other dragons have stayed here on occasion, so it's not like the property has gone uninhabited."

He liked just how stunned Tracy looked as she took in the sight before them. While he thought this was nothing compared to his palace back on the island, in a way, he thought this would be more comfortable to her—less gold, far less intimidating overall.

"Come on, I'll show you around," Klein said, and he pushed open the front door to the wide-open space of the entrance hall. Though still massive by human standards, he actually found it somewhat stuffy and claustrophobic compared to the grand hall that was his throne room.

As they went from room to room, Tracy admiring all the things Klein didn't know he had, the touches the other dragons had added over the years, he found himself growing a little more comfortable in her presence. The day as a whole had done a lot to get him used to being around her, and he had to admit that although when he slept with her, it had been all primal instinct and desire taking over ... something more was on the verge of developing between them.

He felt it as a solid knot in his stomach. An issue he wasn't sure he was ready to address. Klein wanted her, but whenever he thought about her, and what it might mean to take her as his queen, his thoughts went back to the Elder Dragons. He couldn't give up on them, and letting Tracy take too much of his focus .
